Beyond the eye chart

Seeing clearly is only half the story.

The eye chart tests just one skill. How a child uses their vision (focusing, tracking a line of text, teaming both eyes, coordinating hand and eye) shapes how well they read, learn and play. Our unit builds the six vision skills a standard test can miss.

01

Visual Acuity

Seeing sharply, near and far.

02

Eye Focusing

Shifting and holding clear focus between the board and the book.

03

Eye Tracking

Following a line of text smoothly without losing place.

04

Eye Teaming

Both eyes working together as one.

05

Eye–Hand Coordination

Using vision to guide movement, from handwriting to sport.

06

Visual Perception

Understanding and recalling what is seen.

Visual discriminationVisual memoryVisual sequential memory
Spot the signs early

When should a child be seen?

Children rarely say "I can't see properly." Instead, vision problems show up in behaviour, schoolwork and comfort. Watch for these common signs.

Notice any of these? Book a pediatric eye check. Early detection changes everything. Parents, schools and pediatricians are all welcome to refer.

  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Tilting the head or squinting
  • Avoiding reading or close work
  • Holding books very close to the face
  • Losing place or using a finger to read
  • Frequent headaches or tired eyes
  • An eye that turns in or out
  • Trouble remembering what was read
The pediatric eye examination

A complete check, not just a glasses test.

Every child's examination is thorough, unhurried and designed to keep young patients comfortable.

  1. Visual Acuity AssessmentHow clearly your child sees at distance and near.
  2. Detailed RefractionAccurate measurement of any spectacle power needed.
  3. Color Vision AssessmentScreening for colour vision deficiencies.
  4. Binocular Vision AssessmentHow well both eyes align, focus and work as a team.
  5. Ocular Surface EvaluationHealth of the front of the eye, lids and tear film.
  6. Posterior Segment EvaluationExamination of the retina and optic nerve.
What we treat

Common eye problems in children.

Refractive Errors

Short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness and astigmatism.

Amblyopia

"Lazy eye", where one or both eyes don't develop full vision.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction

Eyes that struggle to align, focus or team together.

Pediatric Cataracts

Clouding of the lens that needs early detection and referral.

Nystagmus

Involuntary, repetitive eye movements.

Binocular vision & focusing problems we commonly see

These often go unnoticed on a routine eye-chart test, but can cause headaches, eye strain and difficulty with reading.

Convergence InsufficiencyDifficulty maintaining eye alignment during near focus, leading to an outward drift.
Convergence ExcessExcessive eye convergence during near tasks, causing the eyes to turn inward.
Divergence InsufficiencyDifficulty maintaining eye alignment at distance, causing the eyes to turn inward.
Divergence ExcessDifficulty maintaining eye alignment at distance, causing an outward drift (exophoria).
Accommodative InsufficiencyInability to focus comfortably on near objects; often seen with convergence insufficiency.
Accommodative ExcessOver-active focusing that makes distant objects blurry after near work.
Accommodative InfacilityDifficulty changing focus from near to far and back again.
Myopia management & control

Why controlling myopia matters.

Myopia (short-sightedness) in children isn't just about thicker glasses every year. As myopia progresses, the risk of serious eye conditions later in life rises. Our myopia control program aims to slow that progression early, while your child's eyes are still developing.

  • Higher risk ofRetinal Detachment
  • Higher risk ofRetinal Tear
  • Higher risk ofVitreous Detachment
  • Higher risk ofOptic Neuropathy

Beyond glasses

The real benefits of vision therapy.

Vision therapy is a non-surgical, customised program of visual activities designed to correct or improve specific vision problems and enhance visual skills.

Just as children benefit from physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy, vision therapy is an early intervention that helps the visual system work efficiently. Most therapy is delivered in our clinic.

8-year-old boy

Bilateral Refractive Amblyopia

His school teachers noticed he couldn't see the blackboard. After eye-teaming and visual-efficiency therapy, his vision with glasses reached normal levels and his depth perception improved.

8-year-old girl

Progressive High Myopia with Esotropia

Her father noticed frequent changes in glasses over two years, along with an inward turn of the left eye. With myopia management and orthoptic care, her prescription stopped climbing.

37-year-old woman

Accommodative & Convergence Insufficiency

Severe headaches, eye ache and occasional double vision during long near work for three months. Therapy focused on building convergence and normalising focusing ability.
